Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitne, The Whitney Museum of American Art In its urban context NYC/Manhattan-

Notes, from a European visitor October 2017.

Gertrude Vanderbilt (wed Whitney) could have used her immense Family fortune to enjoy ”Casinos and party Life” all over the world around 1910 but having this urge of expressing herself artistically – she moved down to the Bohemian Greenwich Village in 1907 – away from her Fancy Mansion on cifth Avenue.

Under the early years of her Artistic career, Gertrude is constantly driven by lust and curiosity about new Artistic international expressions. When back home from her international travels, she is buying compulsory experimental “Modern” Arts from her less fortunate American Friends – supporting and encouraging them, on their Artistic paths.

Those cirst enlightened purchases by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney are the indisputable fundament of the fourth in line: Whitney´s Collections exhibition spaces.
